SAFARIS ON THE ISLE OF MULL

What a week its been with the weather here on Mull, on Monday we had severe gales with a constant wind with gusts of 70mph. I was watching a lone Whooper swan trying to fly into the wind and getting nowhere would have been quicker to land and walk to the shore.

Tuesday morning the weather was alot better, I sat in my hind first thing listening to a singing Skylark marking out his territory, as the winds had dropped I took the opportunity to get away for a visit down south to search for some rare birds. I left Oban at 1230am and started my drive down to Leighton Moss. I managed to spot a Tawny Owl and fox as I travelled through the night. I stopped at Killington Lake services for breakfast and watched a couple of pairs of Great Crested Grebes passing weed and head bobbing along with hundreds of Rooks and Black headed Gulls.

Leighton Moss was great with views of Marsh Harrier, Marsh Tit, Nuthatch, Tree Creeper and Tree Sparrow Avocet and plenty of Wades and Ducks, Little Egret and then the two birds I had come all this way to see “ Coot and Moorhen “ after ticking them of my year list I was ready for my next days visit to Martin Mere full of excitement. A little disappointed with the “Mere”, then after a quick visit to Fairhaven lake I headed home.

On Saturday morning early was woken by a Tawny Owl calling in the Garden, Morning was bright but cold on Mull I went around my normal route just to see what was about and was treated to views of a single Otter along the shore then later a Mum and two young Otters playing together in the kelp, a pair of WT Eagles sat in trees close to their nest and two adult Golden Eagles hunting. Which would mean that neither has laid eggs yet.

It was great to get away for a couple of days but as with all of us its nice to get back home. Will finish now as must get the stolen” Coots” out of the car and released here at a secret location .
