SAFARIS ON THE ISLE OF MULL

The week started with nice weather on Monday just out by myself to see what was happening, highlight was watch 6 Eagles in aerial conflict up over the “ bowl “ a mixture of WT and G Eagles.

Tuesday; out on tour again in lovely weather and a great mix of people, managed to get Martin his first Golden Eagle in over 60 years of looking. Otter by Tommies , WT Eagles in 4 location including watching female sit on nest at Loc K, GE over cliff then good views of M&F GE at nest site, plenty of HH and both BT and GN Diver then as we were coming away watched as a male dog Otter ran along the beach heading out to the sea.

Wednesday; still lovely weather, was up at 5am to see if there were any Owls about but no sign. Only thing was the Sparrow H came into the garden and took another Rock Dove. Did notice that the grass was getting long so said to my wife that I would go and get some petrol for the lawn mover then before you could say “ its to nice a day to cut grass”I was on the Staffa boat heading out to sea. Good views of Manx S, Great Skua, nesting Fulmar and the Puffins were just starting to come ashore. A very pleasant afternoon , not sure my wife believed me that the garage had ran out of fuel.

Thursday; again lovely and as I started to throw my bird seed on the garden a rather smart very tame Rock Dove came straight down very close to me which seem odd, on closer inspection it was a racing pigeon with pink and blue rings on its legs and number 8677. If anybody would like to come and collect it it’s still here. But not sure that it would want to leave as he seems very happy and is making a very good impression with the Female Rock Doves as they can now look at this impressive figure of “bird hood “ rather than their over weight fat male Rock Doves. Out on my pm tour with plenty of Eagles, HH SEO and Otter and both Fallow and Red Deer. Sitting at home in my hide late on both M&F HH hunting side by side in the bottom field.

Friday; got up early and went up to an area where I think is a possible site for nesting RT Diver, could not see any sign of a nest on the small Lochan but after about 15 mins I did see two pairs calling and flying overhead before they headed to a larger Loch so fingers crossed.

On Saturday to get back in wife’s good book { a very small book} I went to Oban to get shopping and saw a pair of Merlin heading out over Loch then SEO at Loc S, as the ferry was coming back into Craignure saw what could be a new WTE nest sight. At night as the world watched BGT I was watching a flock of 40 plus Corvids fly into their roost in the trees opposite then right in the middle two Eagles appeared one G and one WT they were constantly being mobbed until they had left and the Corvids settled into the trees for the night.

Today again out early to look for this “new WTE nest sight and get some SEO photo’s. It was a new nest site and a WTE sat close to the nest, both HH and SEO were hunting at Loc S. Believe that a couple of the WTE eggs have hatched last week, but no sign of the pair at Loc G and rumours that the birds at Loc L have abandoned there nest seem to be true as again no sign of them.

Weather turned a lot colder today with snow again back on the tops of the hills, guess “Lawn cutting” will have to wait a few more days as Bilbo would say “I am ready for another adventure” [ glad wife does not read this] .
