This week has given us a little of everything with regards to the weather, from pleasant sunny spells to strong winds with cancelled ferries and snow on the hills. Out in the Sound of Mull the Razorbills and Guillemots are getting together in large flocks. Both pairs of WTE out flying over their respected territories at Craignure on Monday. Watched from home as WTE sat at the nest site in Bunessan and Hoodies in the garden continued to build the nest by pulling the ivy off the rocks to use as nesting material. Midweek was another good raptor day with plenty of H Harries, Sparrow Hawk, Kestrel and WTE views but with out doubt the highlight was watching 5 GE over loc C. One pair forcing another pair away from their home territory as another adult circled below.
On Thursday a Slavonian Grebe coming into summer plumage was at Loch Beg. As the weather got worse over the weekend the first lambs were born. All 5 resident stags are still with their antlers which normally come away end of March start of April.
Next week I am hoping for our first Swallow/ Cuckoo, last year I saw both on April 9th two days earlier than 2014.
Last week “Livingston” the Cuckoo travelled 918 miles in 18hr so 5 good days and he might arrive. If the wind keeps blowing he could be here in 2 and who knows we might get our first view of the Osprey.
