I had my few days away down at Leighton Moss and looking at Morecambe Bay. Its that time of year when there seems to be very little about all the vegetation is getting very high , sat in one of the hides at Leighton and a man came in and said “ I cannot believe it, first time I been in a hide and not one bird to see. I did manage to see Marsh Harrier again and firsts for the year Reed Warb Swift and quick glimpse of Bearded Tit as it flow over the Reeds. Returning back to Mull spotted Hen Harrier on the journey home along with SEO.
It has been a very poor time for the GE of the 4 nest sites that we normally go passed on our tours all 4 have failed. The BTO ringer was here last week and said that it is the worse that he has ever known. The WTEs are doing better with the pair that raised the two Eagle chick last year doing well again with the two about to leave the nest. The Common Seals are now pupping and are getting plenty of views of the WTEs sitting very close to the seals looking for any “ available “ food.
The Osprey or Ospreys depending on who you talk to are still about but views of the Cuckoos are getting less and less along with places to pull in and watch any wildlife. We have had plenty of views of Otter last week but the SEOs and GEs are difficult to see. I think its because there is so much day light about, that everything is feeding early. We did have a really close view of about 10 cetaceans looking at the dorsal fin and head shape I would have said that they were Risso Dolphines. Last few days the small birds are re appearing with Whinchat and Stonechat, Tree Creeper and Spotted Flycatcher about.
The Fallow Deer are often in the “flat field “ or strolling through the River. The Red deer have had their Fawns .
On Thursday had two Swifts flying over the bottom field as I sat in my garden looking for the WTEs opposite in the trees. I have not seen then for over a week on Wednesday for the first time ever the heat haze was making viewing difficult and as I sit here doing this blog I cannot see the trees because of the rain.
